Project Summary

An video based crochet course built to simplify and enhance the beginner crochet learning experience! As a hands-on project, this course combines instructional design and multimedia elements to guide learners through the fundamentals of crochet with engaging videos and custom visuals. Created as an enhanced version of the original Hooked on Crochet Google Classroom program, this Canvas course offers a structured path from learning basic tools to completing a final crochet project, with supportive characters, AI voiceovers, and visual aids that make each step accessible and enjoyable for complete beginners.

The Problem

Learning crochet can be challenging for beginners, especially with limited structured resources that cater to complete novices. Traditional tutorials, often found on platforms like YouTube, lack a cohesive curriculum, leaving learners overwhelmed as they search for the right starting point. Many existing courses also move quickly through stitch demonstrations, with limited interactive support or encouragement, which can discourage beginners from continuing when they encounter difficulties.

The Solution

The new Hooked on Crochet program is a video based, beginner-friendly course designed to guide learners through each stage of their crochet journey with clarity and support. Based on feedback from the original training course, this redesigned program introduces character guides who provide consistent encouragement and guidance, helping learners stay motivated and engaged. Each lesson is crafted to build foundational skills gradually with custom-drawn visuals and step-by-step video demonstrations paced for beginners. By combining structured lessons, engaging multimedia, and ongoing reinforcement from character guides, this course creates a positive, supportive learning environment that allows learners to confidently master crochet fundamentals.

My Process

I refined the original course by storyboarding, creating visual mock-ups, and planned for incorporating interactive elements based on feedback to enhance clarity and engagement.

I developed the Hooked on Crochet training program by creating custom visuals, recording and editing tutorial videos, integrating AI-generated voiceovers, and embedding content into Canvas, ensuring a cohesive and engaging learning experience.

Planning

For the enhanced Hooked on Crochet course, I began by refining the original version, aiming for a more concise and interactive experience. Using a text-based storyboard/script, I structured each lesson to highlight where new learners might need extra support, integrating elements to foster engagement. To visualize the course, I created mock-ups in Canva with a room layout and placeholder characters, which helped me establish an inviting flow. Although the foundational content was already available, determining what to streamline posed a challenge, so I created a demo video of the first lesson and gathered peer feedback, which informed several iterations to optimize pacing and clarity.

Development

To bring the Hooked on Crochet training program to life, I followed a structured approach, beginning with the development of a text-based storyboard script and template images. The script served as the foundation, guiding the creation of the custom-drawn by myself characters, which were designed to reflect the personalities of the animals they were based on (Peyton the dog, Piper the dog, Logan the cat, Charley the cat, and myself as Katey). These characters were carefully crafted to bring a fun, relatable element to the course, enhancing the learner experience.
To maintain consistency and streamline production, I developed template scenes. These reusable templates allowed me to quickly build out each section of the course, adjusting and modifying the scenes as needed. This efficiency was key in keeping the project on track while maintaining the highest production quality.
Once the script and visuals were in place, I took the script to an AI voice creator (Eleven Labs) to generate the audio files for each character. These files were then integrated into both Canva and DaVinci Resolve to sync with the visuals, ensuring smooth audio narration alongside the video content.
The crochet tutorials were recorded using my iPhone, capturing clear, instructional footage. I then edited these videos in DaVinci Resolve, refining them for clarity and engagement before incorporating them into the course.
Once the content was fully developed, I uploaded all videos to YouTube, making them easily accessible for learners. To ensure seamless integration with the Hooked on Crochet curriculum, I set up the course within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). I embedded the YouTube videos into the corresponding sections, allowing for smooth navigation and user experience. Additionally, rubrics, classroom files, and other resources were uploaded and linked within the Canvas course to support learners in their journey.
This process helped me create a consistent, engaging, and accessible learning environment for crochet beginners. It also ensured that learners could easily navigate through each lesson, progressing with confidence.
